AKRON, Iowa — Eight points into Monday’s Class 1A regional semifinal, the Akron-Westfield volleyball team energized its home crowd with a dominant start against Trinity Catholic.
The Westerners jumped out to an 8-0 lead, putting the Tigers what would end up being a familiar spot of fighting from behind.
“That’s the way we like it baby,” Akron-Westfield head coach Robyn Van Eldik said. “We like to dominate right at the beginning, and it just takes a lot off your shoulders.”
Despite giving up nine of the next 12 points to the Tigers, A-W closed out the opening set 14-4 in what stayed true to be a lopsided sweep (25-13, 25-11, 25-20).
