Longtime Auburn football team chaplain drowns in Lake Martin [Video]

Auburn football’s longtime team chaplain, Rev. Chette Williams, drowned on Sunday in Lake Martin. Williams, 61, fell into the lake around 5:45 p.m. while trying to exit his boat near the dock at Kowaliga Restaurant, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Authorities recovered his body just before 7:20 p.m. in the same area. Williams played football for Auburn University from 1982 to 1984 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Adult Education in 1985. He became a licensed minister in 1987, earning a Master of Divinity from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1993. Williams returned to Auburn in 1999 to serve as the chaplain of the football team. He was appointed to that position by the head coach at the time, Tommy Tuberville.
