Missouri lawmaker voices support for ban of stock trading among Congress members [Video]

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KCTV) – United States Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II, announced Wednesday he is supporting a bipartisan act meant to eliminate insider trading in Congress.

Cleaver, a Missouri Democrat, co-introduced the act alongside 43 other lawmakers. It’s called the “Transparent Representation Upholding Service and Trust” (TRUST) Act and would “effectively ban Members of Congress, their spouses, and dependent children from trading individual stocks,” a press release stated.

“At a time when the American people’s faith in our democratic institutions is at an all-time low, lawmakers must take steps to demonstrate they are committed to serving the public, not their personal stock portfolios,” said Cleaver in part.

He called the act “common sense” and compared it to athletes being banned from betting on games “in which they can have a direct impact on the outcome or inside information about the team’s performance.”
