People could literally die: Non-profit makes room for those who need a warm place to sleep amidst frigid temps [Video]

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Freezing temperatures are sweeping across Southeastern North Carolina, which means warming centers across are opening up to give people who need it a safe place to stay.

That includes a space inside the Christian Recovery Centers in Shallotte, a nonprofit organization for people struggling with substance abuse to get help and have somewhere to live.

“Helping people has always been part of my heart,” said the organization’s operations director David Koch.

But with Southeastern North Carolina’s frigid temperatures and more winter weather on the way, Koch says they made space in their dining hall for anyone who needs a warm place to sleep anytime temps are under 40 degrees.

“People could literally die if they’re sleeping out without shelter,” said Koch.

People who come in are welcome to a bed, free hats, blankets and food too.
