Plains prepares for Jimmy Carter state funeral with beefed up security measures [Video]

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Preparations in Plains, former President Jimmy Carter’s hometown, for the final send-off of Georgia’s only president are well underway.

A final farewell to Carter will take place on Saturday.

In the hours before a ceremonial procession from Plains to Atlanta, volunteers and workers could be seen picking up trash and placing barricades along Church and Bond streets, just steps away from Plains High School and the Jimmy Carter Welcome Center.

“There are more, but they usually keep them up there,” said George Mcafee, who lives in Plains.

Security is also being beefed up.

Law enforcement from several local and state agencies, led by the Secret Service and the Military Joint Task Force, were busy reviewing security protocols.

The Sumter Sheriff’s County Office said it has brought on additional staff to fill any gaps for Plains Police.
