Retired Zephyrhills police chief dies at 86 years old [Video]

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — The Zephyrhills Police Department is mourning the death of Chief Robert Howell, who died Tuesday at the age of 86, according to a statement.

The department announced his passing Wednesday, describing Howell as a “pillar of strength for both his colleagues and the citizens of Zephyrhills.”

At some point, he became a security guard for the church before his name was memorialized in 2005 in the department’s new headquarters, the post said.

“During his tenure as Police Chief, Chief Howell led with distinction, emphasizing community engagement, crime prevention, and the highest standards of professionalism within the department,” a statement reads.

“Under his guidance, the Zephyrhills Police Department forged strong partnerships with residents, businesses, and community organizations, fostering a culture of trust and cooperation.”

Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
