Southern Christian Leadership Conference CEO to step down, organization says [Video]

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The president and CEO of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) will step down at the end of the month, according to the organization.

Dr. Charles Steele became president and CEO of SCLC in 2004. He served in the role until 2009 before resuming the role in 2012.

In a statement, Steele said, “We have to take the movement to another level, and I am just extending myself to be a part of the next level. Being in my current position, I cannot take it to the next level.”

Steele is credited with steering the SCLC through great turmoil. Steele raised $20 million in three years and used that money to build a new headquarters and revitalize the organization.

The SCLC called Steele “a Godsend.”
