Sullivan County landmark listed as one of the ten most endangered in Indiana | News [Video]

SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – A Wabash Valley landmark has been placed on the state’s list of the “10 Most Endangered.” The list is for state landmarks that are in jeopardy.

Indiana Landmarks created the annual list. The organization says the buildings on the list can face a combination of threats, including:

• Abandonment
• Neglect
• Dilapidation
• Obsolete use
• Development pressure
• Owners who simply lack money for repairs

On the list is College Hall at the Merom Camp & Retreat Center in Sullivan County.

According to Indiana Landmarks, it was built between 1859 and 1863 for Union Christian College. The college closed in 1924, and it reopened as the Merom Institute. It was a religious camp meeting space.

From 1941 to 1943, it was the base camp for the Soil Conservation Service operated by the American Friends Service Committee. It housed conscientious objectors who worked on area farmlands, creating stock water ponds and drainage systems, constructing fences, building terraces, and …
