The New York Yankees, frustrated in their pursuit of Cody Bellinger in trade talks with the Chicago Cubs, are eyeing four free agents still on the market.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Yankees have turned their attention to the first-base market and are engaged in talks with four free agents: Pete Alonso, Christian Walker, Carlos Santana, and Paul Goldschmidt.
On Sunday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported there is “still a gap” in the discussions between the Cubs and Yankees around who will assume the final year(s) of Bellinger’s contract in a trade.
Bellinger, 29, was unwilling to test the free agent market this winter and instead opted into the second year of a three-year, $80 million contract that pays him $27.5 million in 2025. If Bellinger opts into the third year of the deal, the Cubs will owe him $25 million in 2026.
